Animal Control could be called. And code enforcement can be called for unpicked up poop. Whom do you call about annoying windchimes? They don't reach the decibel level for traditional noise complaints. A new neighbor two doors down has hung not one but TWO sets of wind chimes on her front porch. Honestly, I can hear them from my backyard and out front.
I live in an HOA with tons of rules about garden statues, fences, parking, pets, etc. Windchime use should be at the top of the "NO" list. Sorry, but unless you live on several acres and far away from other homes, you should keep your windchimes inside with a fan blowing on them. I just got my first puppy, and I'm scared silly he will become a barker because of his breed and maybe because I'm inexperienced at training , but I will try very hard not to disturb the peace on my street and encourage quiet behavior from him.
He's only outside supervised, though, whereas the windchimes are going all the time, and we live in a windy area. I'll take either! At least the dog has to sleep occasionally. There is almost always a breeze. Dog noise is IMHO far less irritating than clanging metal. My HOA has a covenant against bells and sound devices on the outside of homes. Wind chimes are by definition a type of bell.
The HOA agreed with me on this, but then they said they could not enforce the covenant because there would be too many bells to have to address!! They said I would have to, at my own expense, hire a lawyer and enforce the covenant myself risking losing the case and having to pay my legal fees and the other person's legal fees.
So, basically, the covenants are meaningless. Omg I am losing. Unruly animals are most certainly not preferable to wind chimes Sorry, not really the same issue, unless wind chimes, but if you still want some unruly animals How loud are the wind chimes you all or rather your neighbors are finding?
Most wind chimes I've encountered would barely be audible around the corner from them, let alone across the yard The leaves are louder than they could possibly be from several doors down unless we're actually talking about basically church bells, either that or you need more trees or further apart neighbors.
Also, listening to wind chimes indoors? Is that actually a thing? As in do people actually buy wind chimes with the intention of sitting and listening to them inside? I would have thought indoor wind chimes were more of a decorating choice, like a dream catcher or one of those cats that bobs its arm.
Or was that more of a facetious suggestion, like creating a special community purely to exclude wind chimes? Noise pollution is noise pollution. It isn't how loud wind chimes are. It's how annoying they are. While you work in your yard, you are a captive audience of someone else's choice in purposeless noise. At least a dog barks with purpose. We just built a house and there is definitely an optimal place to hang wind chimes. At our old home we hung them on the Southeast corner of our deck and the house blocked most of the wind so they would delight us with the slight tinkling even in the strongest winds.
We also had a lot of mature trees around. When we moved in to our new home. I tried to hang our old chimes on the North side of our new house and they just banged and clanged because the winds are so strong and there is nothing to slow the wind. I will try the Southeast side of our new home and see if we can recreate our outdoor oasis there! Guess we will need to plant some sort of wind break to help relieve us from our new location on a windy hill.
My chimes remind me of my grandmother's house as a little girl. We purchased a 27" set from Hallmark years ago that are tuned to an A scale. They make a beautiful melody. However, I can not stand the non tuned clanking wind decorations.
IMO those are not wind chimes. My parents bought a wind decoration from one of their travels that had bamboo sticks and shells. It was horrible and only made a clanking sound that reminded you of a toddler beating wooden spoons on a bowl. So I definitely think there should be different classes of wind chimes and some should be outlawed! Thank you dottt1 and others for the support. General daytime lawn equipment in the spring or summer or a snowblower in the winter are sounds that melt in and out of my head as my neighbors take care of their properties thankfully.
We live on a golf course, so there are lots of rules about yards, landscaping, home design, garage sales, parked cars, and pets. I am ok with those and abide by them. And, yes, I was being facetious about using chimes indoors with a fan. We live on 30 acres. I have two horses, one of whom says "Feed Me" I am translating from horse whenever he spots me, like, whenever; and sometimes yells it at passing cars if he's really wound up.
We are in a valley, so sound bounces and travels. For all I know, our neighbors have lodged horse scream complaints. Anyway, DH loves chimes. I loathe them.
I bought him a set made out of old lobster rope and metal tubes and they DO. Highly recommended! Exactly, the trees provide white noise meaning neighbors at normal distance like in their own yards wouldnt here normal wind chimes around here I mean, we could here the PA system of a nursery that used to be nearby, but we never heard the wind chimes they sold.
I guess I haven't encountered these "gonging" type wind chimes you all are discussing Bad or improperly hung wind chimes are of course bad If they are "clanging" there's something wrong with them. To clarify, I really don't care either way if someone wants to hang some wind chimes.
I find leaf blowers far more disruptive, and completely unnecessary if that is the argument against wind chimes. Dandelions are a pox in some lawns and a wild flower in others There are larger than average lots where I live, and loads of trees including dense pines that stay dense year round. Two neighbors have hung their chimes on second floor decks, so they clang down over trees and shrubs and over anyone outside working nearby. The people are rarely outside. I have to listen to their clangy chimes when they are not even there!
Like if I turned on a radio outside then left. It is ridiculous to have to work my outdoor activities around breezy days if I want some peace outside. How is it not rude to hang those things within ear shot of anyone, wildlife included? I hope our wind chimes keep the wildlife away. Turkeys, coyotes, deer, moles, groundhogs and other wildlife do tremendous damage to our yards and gardens. I especially despise the barn swallows and pigeons that nest and poop all over everything.
They can live over in the trees past the tenure! I've had 14 wild turkeys in my yard and surrounding yards for weeks now in spite of the neighbor's irritating windchime.
The only animals the chimes keep away are the songbirds who don't want to compete with the sound. I also have a flock of pigeons and native doves that roost on my roof.
They are not bothered either. However, not a songbird in sight. Regardless of my previous posts, I'm returning my chimes to Costco, they were ridiculously loud. I can blast music and not hear it outside, but I can hear my chimes through the walls no problem. Maybe one day when I get some more land I can get some chimes, one day. There are all kinds of wind chimes. If you are in close proximity to your neighbors, get a smaller chime that has a delicate sound and hang it in an area that does not get whipping winds.
Then you can enjoy the gentle sound. Dear Annie: My parents are up in age 81 and My younger sister and I are their only children. I take my mom and dad to doctor appointments and call them every day to check on them. I live an hour and fifteen minutes away. My sister lives 20 minutes away and never calls them or sees them. On top of all this, my dad made her executor of the trust. My ringtone on her phone is a pig oinking. But I feel like the only mistreated child. It does not like we are family.
What should I do? But to dwell on her cruelty and the unfairness of the situation is to inflict further pain upon yourself. Compare wind chimes to leaf blowers. Wind chimes and leaf blowers have this in common: they are incessant, unnecessary man-made noise machines. You love the sound of your wind chimes so much? Keep that noise all to yourself. Stick those chimes in your living room and set your air fan to blow that sound all throughout your house.
Be sure and let the sound continue on into the night. Night after night. Allow those of use who enjoy quiet in our homes and the sounds of nature outside to do so without being bullied by your idiotic, unnatural chimes. Thank you. Why should anyone have to put up with wind chimes especially in a windy coastal setting. Wind chimes are not better than anything. They play their incessant noise relentlessly. Do not put them up anywhere.
Wind chimes play their incessant noise relentlessly. Windchimes are simply noise pollution for the sake of it. Far better to hear the wind in the trees, rather than the manic repetitive clatter of these outdated objects. I have seen the expensive ones, but they sound just as irritating as the cheaper ones. When they were popular about 25 yrs ago, I was driven mad by them.. Mercifully they are now out of fashion, apart from when visiting the graveyard where our parents are. The tinkling of ornamental fountains can be irritating too… Some people have very sharp hearing, and are very sensitive to sounds..
Yet our neighbour had a 17th century clock, the chimes of which could be heard, and that was not irritating.. But well tended lush ones can be nice..
I agree they are awful things. Fell out with my neighbour of 20 years over this. Asked politely to take them down, or at least at night as it was putting me off sleep. Met with negative reaction, had to call police. I hate them. I have next door neighbour down the road, 3 doors down, and every time I go out in the garden you hear the battering of metal. I would love to stand outside and listen to the sound of the wind, peaceful air, and all I hear is, chime, chime, chime, chime, chime.
We live in hills, and the wind does get strong, and you can hear the chime, chime halfway down the street. I go out and hang washing, chime, chime, chime, chime, I stand outside and wait for dog, chime, chime, chime, chime, and I out and garden to get a breather and watch stars, chime, chime, chime, chime.
To drive the neighbors nuts! The same 3 or 4 notes over and over and over and over, OMG. You like that? Take it down. Take it down now. Re-purpose the materials into something purposeful. Yes, I can hear my beautiful wind chimes from inside my house — of course — they lull me to sleep and gently awaken me in the morning breeze dependent , and calm me throughout the day — and I doubt the neighbors hear anything over their barking dogs. However, I have had many neighbors walk past my house, when I am outside, to stop and tell me how beautiful the sound is.
Angelic, nothing like the banjo.
