Females are sexually mature at one year old, males in their second year. The major threat to bobcats throughout the US is being hunted for their soft fur, in some areas to near extinction. Where bobcats now must share their natural habitat with increasing numbers of people, they are also hunted by farmers to protect their livestock. Despite being very adaptable animals, they are also threatened by habitat loss when populations are pushed into smaller and more dispersed areas of their once huge natural range.

Shelter is also a very important element to a bobcat's living environment.
Bobcats require shelter both for resting and for fleeing potentially dangerous situations. Individual bobcats often establish numerous dens for themselves, with smaller ones in areas they frequent less often.
Some typical shelter types in bobcats include hollow logs, caves, thickets, tree stumps, ledges of stone and heaps of undergrowth. Although bobcats are not classified as endangered animals due to consistent populations, destruction of habitat is indeed a risk for them, according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Approximately just under one million bobcats exist today, according to the University of Michigan Animal Diversity Web. DIET Bobcats mainly hunt rabbits and hares. Bobcats are also known to eat rodents, birds, bats and even adult deer, which they usually consume during the winter months, as well as lambs, poultry and young pigs when a ranch is near.
In the early to mid s, bobcat populations in many Midwestern and eastern states of the United States were decimated due to the increased value of its fur. However, international laws began to protect the world's spotted cats in the s, and populations have rebounded since then. Today, populations are stable in many northern states and are reviving in many others.
