What is the difference between a hookah and a vaporizer

You buy your pack of cigarettes or rolling tobacco and papers, light up, and in an instant, you receive the nicotine hit that your body has become so accustomed to. But what happens when you decide to ditch the tobacco and switch to vaping? E-cigarettes, shisha pens, and vaporizers — what do they do and what do they mean for you and your nicotine habit?

First things first. In all instances, the e-liquid is heated to varying temperatures by an atomiser inside the device, and the resulting vapour created by the evaporated liquid is then inhaled to simulate smoking. Some commentators argue that the sweet and fruity flavour might be attracting minors to vaping, whilst other argue that e-liquid flavours actually support smokers on their journey away from smoking onto vaping and then many will quit both.

Also, testing of some e-cigarette products found the vapor to contain known carcinogens and toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde , as well as potentially toxic metal nanoparticles from the vaporizing mechanism. The health consequences of repeated exposure to these chemicals are not yet clear. Another worry is the refillable cartridges used by some e-cigarettes. Users may expose themselves to potentially toxic levels of nicotine when refilling them.

Cartridges could also be filled with substances other than nicotine, thus possibly serving as a new and potentially dangerous way to deliver other drugs. Teens are also using e-cigarettes for marijuana. Finally, and perhaps the issue that is of greatest concern is that in addition to the unknown health effects, early evidence suggests that e-cigarette use may serve as an introductory product for youth who then go on to use other tobacco products, including conventional cigarettes, which are known to cause disease and lead to premature death.

A recent study showed that students who have used e-cigarettes by the time they start 9th grade are more likely than others to start smoking traditional cigarettes and other smokable tobacco products within the next year Rigotti, So as is indicated in the Monitoring the Future, graph below, more students start using e-cigarettes than smoking but the studies show that they are likely to move onto smoking cigarettes.

A traditional hookah is a type of water pipe. The tobacco burns in a small bowl. The smoke from the tobacco then travels through a water chamber and along a rubber hose to a mouthpiece. The smoker inhales through this mouthpiece.

An electric coil inside of an atomizer, or tank, is used to rapidly heat vape juice or e-liquids that have soaked into cotton surrounding the coil to create vapor. This happens almost instantly when the smoker inhales from the pen or mod.

There are several variants in smaller vape pens and large vape mods but all use a similar model. There are limited crossover devices like the e-hookah head which is a vape device that sits atop a hookah pipe. These devices also use the heating coil to produce vapor which is then pulled through the hookah. Shisha tobacco is a mixture of tobacco leaves, vegetable glycerin, a sweetener like honey or molasses, and flavoring juices.

When baked with hookah charcoal , the glycerin and juices vaporize to create smoke and flavor while tobacco provides the nicotine hit.

The tobacco does not combust but is rather baked making hookah very different than smoking cigarettes. The large selection of shisha flavors is a huge draw for hookah enthusiasts that like to experiment with new tastes and creative mixes. Vape juice or e-liquid consists of vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, nicotine, flavoring and sweeteners. The nicotine can be extracted from tobacco leaves or synthetic nicotine.

The heating coil comes in contact with the liquid mixture creating vapor with the vegetable glycerin being the main proponent of the large clouds. An e-liquid with a higher ratio of vegetable glycerin VG to propylene glycol PG will create larger clouds. Adult smokers who are attempting to quit should use evidence-based treatments such as nicotine replacement therapy.
