It is the only way to access St. The castle is open year round even when The Queen is in residence. Changing of the Guard is something you really should try to see while you are in town. It takes place in the Lower Ward inside the castle at am. The easiest way to travel is by Great Western train. Pick up the train at Paddington Station runs every 15 minutes or so and get off at Slough.
Transfer to the other side of the Slough train station and take it to Windsor. Looking to spend more time in Windsor and see more than the castle? Have you made a visit to Windsor Castle? Windsor Castle as a whole is pretty much open all year round. Clearly, it is a private home still and it is possible that aspects of it will be closed for private occasions e. Although the castle is open almost all year round, certain parts are only seasonally of special note is the Round Tower which pretty much open only during the summer months.
Long story short, not being able to take photos here meant the audio guide came in handy and my plans to quickly check out the State Apartments went out of the window fast. Leaving the Staterooms, we pretty much spend the next 30 minutes or so just wandering around the castle ground, taking as much of it as possible.
Leaving the castle, we headed into Windsor for a bite to eat, quickly finding ourselves in a tea room. The choice for the afternoon was pretty easy — cream teas all-round. Actually, sparkling cream teas which is pretty much the same as regular cream teas, except it came with glasses of bubbles! Thorough refreshed, we left the tea room and went for a little amble through the town, stopping at the church to check out the Last Supper painting which dates back to the s ….
The sun was starting to change to its golden hues as made our way down to the River Thames…. The grand old buildings here pretty much take me back to my days in Cambridge Uni — some of the buildings here even look just like our colleges back in Cambridge. After a bit of a sneak peek into its courtyards, we went off on a gallivant through the quiet yet quaint streets of Eton…. If you're in the Castle, congregate in the parade ground by the main exit in front of St George's Chapel.
Most people after getting their introductions and briefings about the castle on their tour will make their way past the moat of the Round Tower not open to the public up to the north terrace. It is here that the entrance to the State Apartments is situated. From the north terrace you gaze down to Windsor town below and get far reaching views of the surrounding countryside.
Windsor town looks much smaller from up here. In Windsor Castle went through an extended period of restoration of the inner Hall, formerly closed to the public. The Dolls' House is precisely what you'd expect, a single miniature dolls' house suitable for royalty complete with miniature crown jewels. Much of the southern part of the State Apartments was destroyed by fire in and has been restored. Arguably your experience is much the better for it; some of the rooms that were beginning to look faded and antique now really do bring alive what the original rooms would have looked like on completion.
Such are the treasures that you can perhaps look at an obscure painting only to realise that your are inches from an original Rubens when looking at the information on it. St George's Chapel is a working church with services every day. George's Chapel is open daily but closed to visitors on Sundays as services are held throughout the day.
Worshippers are welcome to attend the services. The church also closes earlier than the rest of the castle to prepare for the evening service. If you're entering the castle from early afternoon onwards it is worth making St George's your first port of call. The Gothic architecture is particularly impressive, particularly the roof. Perhaps most fascinating and differentiating the chapel from similar churches and abbeys is the Order of the Garter, the world's oldest national order of knighthood in continuous existence, with a history stretching back to King Edward III in medieval times.
Membership of the Order is extremely limited and includes the monarch of the United Kingdom, the Prince of Wales and not more than twenty-four companion members. St George's is home to the Order, as St. George is patron saint and also patron saint of soldiers and also of England. Members are each assigned a stall in the chapel choir above which his or her heraldic devices are displayed.
